Internet Telephony

Internet Telephony is transport of telephone calls over the Internet, no matter whether traditional telephony devices, multimedia PCs or dedicated terminals take part in the calls, and no matter whether the calls are entirely or partially transmitted over the Internet.

PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) or regular telephony.

The existing telephone network, PSTN is based on circuit switching, where a dedicated connection is established at the beginning of each phone call and that connection remains until the phone conversation is terminated. When the conversation ends or the receiver is hung up, the connection will be broken and available for a new phone conversation. The quality of the voice over PSTN is almost like a normal face-to-face conversation. PSTN is reliable over power cuts and during bad weather conditions but PSTN has some significant drawbacks such as inefficient use of bandwidth. This constant connection can be considered as a waste of resources as a packet-switching network does not require the exclusive use of a dedicated connection.

How does Internet Telephony works?

Internet Telephony is based on packet switching, where the connection is shared instead of using a dedicated one as in PSTN. When a voice is sent via the data network, the voice is first digitalized and placed into packets. This technique requires an application on the sender's site to digitalize the voice into a digital signal. On the receiver's side, this digitalized signal needs to be converted back to an analog signal so it can be played back to the receiver.

What do I need?
The minimum requirements are a connection to the Internet and a multimedia computer. You can download a softphone for free and start talking. Alternatively you can use a VoIP device connected to the computer or an adaptor. See picture above.
