The only disadvantage of a Calling Plan is that you commit to a monthly
fee for the service, so you need to compare plan prices and figure out if
they represent a cost saving to you.
If you only make calls to one or 2 people long distance (or don't make that
many long distance calls) then it may be cheaper for you in the long run to
purchase Telephone Adapters that connect your phone to your Internet
connection.
In this situation, all calls between you and another person are free forever
(if you have both bought the same Adapter or use the same Pay As You
Go Service e.g. Skype), and you then pay a lower per-minute rate
(typically 2 cents) for calls to any other telephone within North America
plus you get reduced rate International calling rates.

What You Need
In summary, these are your options for setting up VoIP for your home or
home office:
A) VoIP software if you are happy making and receiving calls only via
your PC or your laptop
B) If you want to make and receive calls through your regular
telephone, a VoIP telephone Adapter will connect your phone to the
Internet via your high-speed modem
C) A VoIP-designed phone automatically connects you to the Internet
without the need for an Adapter, but may not have the physical
design and features that you are used to with your own phone

included within a first month Activation Fee when you sign up).
