The big draw for most people is the amount of money VoIP saves them on
their long distance and international calls, and all-inclusive Calling Plans or
Pay As You Go Plans are popular as a result. Several Calling Plans offer
unlimited calls within the United States and Canada for around $20 a
month, with additional per minute rates to Europe and Asia as low as 2
cents a minute.
Other plans offer completely unlimited international calling to 20 of the
most popular countries for as little as $19.95 a month, while still other
plans function something like the cellular phone industry model by giving
you ‘x’ minutes for ‘y’ dollars a month, then a per-call fee if you exceed the
monthly limit, and finally Pay As You Go Plans which have no monthly fee
but charge you e.g. $0.02 cents a minute for every call within North
America.
If you decide to move beyond a software-only PC-based solution using a
headset and microphone, then basically you have three choices.
1. Either get a VoIP Adapter free from whomever you sign up with for a
Calling Plan
2. Purchase a VoIP Telephone Adapter (or a VoIP phone) directly from
an equipment supplier and have no Calling Plan
3. Purchase your preferred Adapter/VoIP phone and also sign up for a
Calling Plan or Pay As You Go Plan
There are a number of advantages in choosing a monthly Calling Plan
from a Service Provider:
• You will get a VoIP Telephone Adapter sent to you free as part of
the sign-up package
• All calls between you and other people that use the same Service
Provider are free regardless of location
• You will get many Advanced Features that will not be available if you
just buy Adapters direct from a manufacturer
• You can choose from a range of Unlimited or Fixed Minute Calling
Plans, both domestically or internationally
