  General Questions
What is Internet Telephony?
A conjunction of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls.

  .
What is VOIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and it allows you to place telephone calls over a data network like the internet. This is a technical word that is frequently interchangeable with Internet Telephony.

  .
How does Internet Telephony works?
It operates by converting your voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that can then be transmitted over the Internet. The digital signal is then converted at the other end back to a voice signal that the other party can hear. When you use a phone with an adapter connected to the computer the calls are placed just like a regular telephone. You first hear a dial tone then the call is made. You are also able to place a call directly from your computer using a conventional telephone or microphone.

  .
How Do I Know If I have a VoIP Phone Call?
The phone will ring like any other call. There is no difference at all.

  .
Does it work with cell phones?
Yes, you can call cell phones.

  .
Can I call a regular phone?
Yes.

  .
What Are Some Advantages of Internet Telephony?
Because VoIP is digital, it may offers features and services that are not available with a traditional phone. If you have a broadband Internet connection, you need not maintain and pay the additional cost for a line just to make telephone calls.

  .
Can I Take My internet Phone Adapter With me When I Travel?
You may be able to use your VoIP service wherever you travel as long as you have a broadband Internet connection available. In that case it would work the same as in your home.

  .
Can I surf the Internet while I'm talking?
Yes if your bandwidth permits you to talk on the phone and surf at the same time.

  .
What is a SIP phone?
SIP stands for Session Internet Protocol. It is a software used for setting up calls between devices. Cliconnect uses SIP phones.

  .
Does My Computer Have to be Turned On?
Not if you are making calls with an IP phone conected to an adapter. But if you are using soft phone, you will have to turn on the computer to enable you to make a call.

  .
Can I send a fax from one user phone number to another (IP to IP)? ?
This FAX service is not guaranteed. IP to IP faxing, both the sender and receiver need to be Cliconnect members and have their fax machines attached to IP analog telephone adapters (ATAs). One other important factor when faxing over VoIP is the quality and speed of your Internet connection. Since fax data cannot be compressed, the G711u/a CODEC must be used. This codec requires a minumum of 64Kb/s in both directions to be reliable, but we recommend more than 90Kb/s.

  .
Can I send a fax from my account to a traditional fax machine(IP to PSTN) ?
IP to PSTN faxing is not supported.

  .
  Requirements
What equipment do I need for Internet Telephony phone calls?
Your existing incoming high-speed Internet connection should be sufficient but the higher the connectivity the better the signal. In terms of hardware, you can hook up an inexpensive microphone to your computer or connect a phone directly to a VoIP telephone adaptor (ATA). Or you can use a phone specially made to work with Internet Voice. This is called an SIP Phone. Each SIP phone is a network endpoint, and voice is routed via its IP address. It allows a DID (direct inward dialing) number to move with a user. You can move, add or remove stations and never have to call your interconnect/PBX service company. SIP phones also allow full use of advanced features like voice mail to e-mail and auto attendant.

  .
Does it work on Mac/Linux?
Yes. You can use a softphone or a phone made for Internet Voice. Check out the available phones here.

  .
Do I have to buy a phone or adaptor?
No. You can make calls using a "softphone". A softphone is a downloadable software you can install on your computer.

  .
Does it work with dial up conexions?
Yes, but you'll need to buy a softphone that supports a G723 Codec to install on your computer. This software works with connections with less than 128Kbps. The connection must be stable enough to support a reliable transmition of voice packets . To check your bandwidth you can download and use a trial version of Ping Plotter.

  .
What are the bandwidth requirements for Cliconnect phone service?
Cliconnect phone service uses advanced compression technology based on G.729, an international voice compression standard. Several factors associated with your broadband connection including delay, packet loss and bandwidth can affect audio quality. Tne minimum bandwidth requirement 64 kb/s in both directions. The phone service can be obtained below 64 kb/s but audio quality may be adversely affected. SIP IP phone must use G729 as the low bandwidth CODEC since Cliconnect does not support G723.
